The House That Suzi Built For Jack!!
The torrential weather continues, flooding is rife and the animals are suffering. It breaks my heart, the scrawny animals we see in the paddocks all around are a sorry state, and to think it lambing season. No, I cannot think about that too much.
On the block, our animals are in fine fettle. However, the strangest thing happened the other day, looking back it was all my fault, but still it gave me a huge shock, the second one in as many days.
The first, was, that, Jack the Cat was in a fight with our four dogs, they know better and usually he can out run them.
But, this time he didn’t and sustained a dislocated sternum for his troubles. I was furious, and my neighbour’s heard me telling the pack of hounds off, who were suitably cowering, running quick smart, with their tails between their legs towards home. But Sam, caught my eye, what was that hanging off her face??
On inspection, it was Jack the Cat, well her innocent run towards me was foiled, he had his claws firmly embedded in the side of her face, being dragged along on his side. I scooped him up and off to the vets we headed.
Poor thing, I cried all night, it was my fault for opening the gate, leaving four stir crazy dogs unattended for a minute while I checked on the chickens.
He spent five days in the vets and came home to a comfy bed in our main bedroom. He is having first class treatment and he is loving it!!
He gets to snuggle up in our bed every night and is kept warm during the day. Perfect. The way things should be for an aging cat.
I had build a five star accommodation, but JC, regally turned his nose up at it heading for the king sized bed, smart boy that Jack!! So now it is to be installed in the chicken house as a nesting, cum, brooding box.
I was out in the storm for three days, cutting, banging, sawing, insulating and building this, all form re-cycled wood I have collected in our travels. It was going to have a bamboo railing, it went from a simple house to five star bachelor pad in a very short space of time!!
It was while I was creating, that, one of our roosters kept chasing an older chicken, who was having none of his manly charms. She would run at full pelt to flee his amorous advances and hide behind my legs.
This happened numerous times, I thought nothing of it. Infact, I was rather amused by the antics. But, it didn’t last long, when my back was turned, I was attacked from behind, and I can tell you it HURT like hell!!
It took me by surprise, I have never had any problems with other roosters, and it took my a while to work out that was what happened.
I didn’t have to wait long, the feisty rooster saw me as the enemy, and took every opportunity to attack me. It got to the stage that I couldn’t got outside with out him flying up at me, yep I was enemy number one in his book.
Well, I tried everything, but to no avail, he was out to get me. So, I am sorry to say, he had to go. I am under the impression, that Minorca’s are an aggressive breed, especially the roosters, and NEVER, I mean NEVER, come between a rooster and his girls!!
