Just Shear Madness!!
Is it shear madness or a case of gritty determination that has had me down in my knees cutting the spring grass in the orchard with my hand shears and a push mower??
Since the neighbour has obviously decided we don’t need our orchard grass cutting anymore, I asked before it grew too long if they would mind if their son cut our orchard grass with their ride on lawn mower, for payment of course.
Well, the son was interested, but, mother was sceptical and said she would come and have a look, that was weeks ago, so I presume there has been a no show and we will soon not be able to see anything if the spring grass grows much higher!!
Well, don’t underestimate me, I would like a wild flower & herbal ley in the orchard this year, if only to help heal the damage from the chemical spray. And looking at the problem won’t make it go away…tried that!!
I was passing a friends house and popped in to see it they had a strong bush cutter. I was wrapped when hubby came back with a petrol bush cutter with twin blades, a solid cutter and a line cutter, just the job.
I spent two days trying to start the thing and finally gave up in anger and frustration then I realised the universe was telling me that jobs here on the block have to be done without the aid of motor powered machinery of any kind, thanks universe!!
So, out with the shears and push mower, I reckon it will take eight days of solid snipping and cutting and a final mow to make it ready for all the seed.
I have spent two days out there and things are looking great…it’s like dot to dot if you imagine the fruit and nut trees are the dots!!
So, here’s to 6 more days of aches and pains!!

Use a scythe, but don’t overdue it. The first time I tried to do this on high grass I was in top shape but lay panting on the ground after 100 sq. ft. or so. I don’t think those muscles get used very often.
Hi Kevin Thank you for the advice:) We have not been able to locate a sythe in the years we have been on the block and I am not sure if my 4ft nothing frame could weild such a mighty instrument!!
