HAPPY NEW YEAR 2009
Happy New Year to all the avid readers out there, I hope 2009 is as good for you as it is going to be for us!!
I have been slaving away in the kitchen garden and I am very proud of my efforts so far, we have pea’s, zucchini’s, herbs, a variety of unusual salad greens.
It is SO exciting, to contemplate what to have for lunch and just go into the kitchen garden and come back with your arms full of goodies!!
I have tomatoes, broccoli, capsicums, aubergines, cabbage, cauliflowers and SO many more things that I am keeping an eye on.
The main problems I have found in the Kitchen garden, is the blackbirds… one in particular, kept sneaking through the tiniest gap in the chicken wire to have a feast on the young seedlings, he particularly liked the cauliflowers, aubergines and carrot seedlings.
To stop his antic’s, I put grass cuttings in between the gaps, this did the trick, but then the snails too up residence in the grass cuttings!!!
So, out I go every morning to throw them over the fence, I could use a mug of beer, but, our neighbour would rather drink it. LOL!!
Thank goodness the weather has been working in our favour, we were desperately low on water at the beginning of spring, we lost one water tank when the wool shed fell down in the winter, so our back up supply has gone.
But, I am happy to report, that, we are doing great, no ‘city’ water here!! We have paddled out in the rain to collect water and pour it into the tank and now we have just over half a tank, worth the hard work when you think water is free but the tanker is $300 to &500 depending on which company.
I have been begging any who will listen and who has the equipment to come and cut our paddocks for months…to no avail.
Now the grass is SO long it is about to fall over into a soggy mass, not letting the young green grass through, and I want to extend the herbal ley, but cannot do this until the grass has been cut, it really is frustrating, and I am determined that by spring next year, I will have found a solution, one which doesn’t involve asking the neighbours.
Maybe, some more goats and a few calves?? Who knows what will come our way??
But, coming your way is another edition of ‘The Lifestyler’ I am just putting the finishing touches to it.
Also this year will see the launch of the ‘Organic Sow and Grows’ these will be great for all levels of kitchen gardeners.
So, keep tuned, it’s going to be a busy, busy year.
