IMPORTANT MONTH
For collecting seeds. Summer is in full swing now, enjoy the lazy days and great produce from your kitchen garden.
Watch, harvest, dry & save seeds from favourite and best vegetables.
PLANTING:

Sow in trays or Plant out seedling for:

In cooler areas: Sow or plant out: Peas (in late feb)
In warm areas: Sow or plant out: Potato, pineapple, mango, sweetcorn & sweet basil
Herbs
Take cuttings of: Mint, marjoram, oregano, rosemary, sage, thyme, watercress & lavender.
Grow a green manure crops of: Early cowpea, mungbean, barley, Japanese millet or oats
Also cereal rye in late feb
GENERAL
Collect & make mulch for next year.
Prune all stone fruit trees, especially young trees after harvest.
Dry Harvested Flowers
Remove berry-bearing foliage from female asparagus plants
MOISTURE CONTROL
Top up compost/mulch around vegetables, Macadamia and fig trees
FEEDING
Lightly fertilise fig, young citrus, mature bananas, passionfruit, and grapes (after harvest)
Give camellia’s a sprinkle of used tea leaves
Correct magnesium deficiency in citrus if needed
On damp soil:
Use fertiliser tea for: young grapes, asparagus seedlings and young crowns
Use seaweed tea for: strawberries
ORCHARD
Lightly fertilise fig, young citrus, mature bananas, passionfruit, and grapes (after harvest)
Prune all stone fruit trees, especially young trees after harvest
HARVEST
A busy time for harvesting everything from:
Aubergines
Capsicums
Beans of all varieties
Garlic
Maori potatoes
Tomatoes
