A Tribute To An Inspiration
I recently read an interesting article on John ‘Farmer John’ Peterson, who runs a very successful Community Supported Agriculture (CSA for short) farm, called Angelic Organics in Caledonia, just outside Chicago.
‘Farmer John’ has created THE largest CSA in the USA and feeds a whopping 6000 locals every week. This is an amazing concept and really conceptualizes community spirit and how powerful it can be.
So, what exactly is a CSA?
A CSA is not free, it is a scheme which runs on pay as you eat kind of theme. You sign up and pay for and receive, a box of fresh produce each week, for the growing season, roughly, 20 weeks of the year.
This means, 6000 people, pay a fixed sum of money and ‘Farmer John’ grows them a varied selection of organic vegetables, which they get delivered to their front door.
You also get a weekly newsletter telling them about the vegetables and life on Angelic Organics farm and as an added bonus they also get recipes ideas for how they can prepare the vegetables!!
Pretty good value all round I would say!!
- You don’t have to take a chance and grow your own
- You can have fresh vegetables and fruit without the room to grow them in, and lets face it many people live in cities or neighborhoods without patches of land to grow a weed, let alone vegetables to feed their family.
- You really don’t have to DO anything, it’s all nurtured, grown, harvested and delivered to your front door.
- You can swap out the vegetables you don’t like and have such a varied selection, that there is bound to be something for everybody
- You are safe in the knowledge, your food is chemical free and safe for you and your family
WOW!!
What more could you wish for??
So, come on, those of you who cannot grow your own, pay for someone to grow it for you, get the whole community involved and it’s a win win situation for all of you.

This is a terrific concept!
I’ve got to say this is a brilliant concept and one I would gladly participate in in my own community.
It’s all about eating locally and for those living in the city and who don’t like gardening … this is simply brilliant!
Miss Gisele B.
There is a great film about John called “The Real Dirt on Farmer John”. It is a film festival type flic and told about his whole life on the family farm. Worth seeing
Cheers
